The Collegiate West: A Hiker's Tale of Endurance and Reward
The Colorado Trail is a challenging journey, and the Collegiate West section is no exception. This 80-mile stretch across the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness is a true test of endurance and a hiker's dream come true. As I embarked on this adventure with my dad, we were eager to explore the majestic mountains and uncover the secrets of this iconic trail.
A Wake-Up Call: Hope Pass
Our journey began with a steep climb up Hope Pass, a four-mile stretch that left us breathless. The sheer intensity of the ascent was a stark reminder of the challenges ahead. But as we reached the summit, the breathtaking views made every step worthwhile. The feeling of accomplishment was immense, and it set the tone for the rest of our hike.
Hiking Above Tree Line: A Unique Challenge
One of the most unique aspects of the Collegiate West is hiking in exposed terrain for extended periods. We planned for three and a half days in the wilderness, and thankfully, the weather cooperated. The forecast, though inaccurate, predicted clear skies, allowing us to enjoy the stunning scenery without major thunderstorms. However, the sun became our unexpected adversary, as we realized its intensity after a day of hiking in T-shirts and shorts.
A Welcoming Haven: The Butterfly House and Salida
After four days of hiking, we reached the Butterfly House, a cozy hostel near Monarch Pass. This self-service, donation-based haven offered a much-needed respite. The owner, Shane, provided a shuttle service to Salida, a nearby town, where we indulged in delicious burgers and Thai food. The town's Safeway store was a boon for resupplying our provisions. We even caught a movie, Batman, with fellow hikers, creating lasting memories.
A Hiker's Perspective: Jackson Mauser's Passion
As an avid hiker, I, Jackson Mauser, have explored the east coast's trails and conquered the Appalachian Trail in 2025. My passion for the outdoors is insatiable, and I find solace in nature when not immersed in school or outdoor adventures. The Collegiate West section of the Colorado Trail is a testament to the beauty and challenges of hiking, leaving me with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
